01 — Overview
A closer look
Night vision works through two different technologies. Image-intensifier tubes amplify very faint ambient light, such as starlight and moonlight, into a green- or white-toned image; Gen II+ and Gen III refer to generations of these tubes. A thermal imager looks at heat rather than light: it can pick out warm targets such as people, vehicles and engines even in total darkness. The two technologies complement each other: one brings out detail, the other the heat signature.
A helmet mount holds the device steady in front of the eye and leaves the hands free for weapon and kit. A monocular keeps one eye adapted to the dark and is lighter; a binocular gives depth perception and is preferred for driving and fast movement across terrain. The right choice depends on the mission, the ambient light and the fit between helmet and mount. Night-vision systems are subject to export licensing, and procurement should be planned within that framework.
