A closer look
A ballistic helmet is the layer that protects the head against handgun threats. The KG helmet shell is made of UHMWPE laminate: unidirectional fiber plies are stacked at crossing angles and consolidated under heat and pressure into a one-piece shell. When a bullet strikes, its energy travels along the fibers and spreads over a wide area instead of staying at a single point. The shell is rated to NIJ IIIA, which NIJ 0101.06 defines with the .357 SIG and .44 Magnum test rounds. In the NIJ scale, IIIA is the heaviest handgun level.
The mission decides the cut. The ACH cut covers more of the sides of the head and the ear area, suiting conventional patrol and combat roles. The FAST cut sits high at the ears, so active hearing protection and comms headsets fit comfortably with the helmet. A four-point padded suspension holds the helmet in place and balances its weight. An optional NVG mount lets a night-vision device attach to the front of the shell. Keeping the weight within 1.25–1.45 kg is decisive for neck load over long missions.
