01 — Overview
A closer look
An armor-piercing round carries a hardened steel core, and a fiber-only plate may not slow that core enough. In a hybrid plate the first contact is with a technical ceramic harder than the core itself: the Al₂O₃ or SiC strike face blunts the tip, breaks the core up and sheds its velocity. The UHMWPE backer then catches the remaining fragments and broken ceramic, spreading and absorbing their energy along the fibers. Ceramic is never armor on its own; the two layers work as one system.
The plate is rated stand-alone to Level IV, the highest level in NIJ 0101.06, against the .30-06 M2 AP test round. Its multi-curve shape follows the lines of the torso. In SAPI M cut it weighs 2.7–3.1 kg: heavier than the PE plate, in exchange for protection against armor-piercing threats. Because the ceramic fractures at the point of impact, multi-hit performance is limited and must be verified separately. The plate does not float, and its sensitivity to heat is low.

Al₂O₃ / SiC: hard ceramic that blunts and breaks up the armor-piercing core.
-
UHMWPE backer
Absorbs the remaining energy by spreading it along the fibers.
-
