Ballistic Shield

In a building entry, the most dangerous moment is the instant the door opens. A ballistic shield gives the point man portable cover and partly screens the team stacked behind. The shield comes at two levels: the NIJ IIIA configuration is the lighter answer to handgun threats, while the NIJ III configuration is rated against rifle threats and is heavier. The choice depends on the weapon you expect to face and how long the shield must be carried.

The viewing window lets the user watch the scene without leaning out from behind the shield. MOLLE handles help each user keep a secure grip across carry positions. The shield carrier usually fights one-handed with a pistol, so the shield’s weight and balance matter as much as its protection level. Whether it leads an entry team down a narrow corridor or a riot unit across open ground, the principle is the same: put a portable hard surface between the threat and the team.
