01 — Overview
A closer look
In close protection, the greatest advantage is protection that cannot be seen. The ballistic briefcase looks like an ordinary executive case from the outside, while its NIJ IIIA inner panel is rated against handgun threats. In an attack, the case unfolds into a shield held in front of the principal’s upper body. The aim is to buy the protection team the critical seconds it needs to move the principal to a vehicle or a safe area. In the hand of a protection officer, it is cover that is always ready.
The case can be used as an everyday briefcase, so protection never leaves the side of the principal or the protection officer. NIJ IIIA is the heaviest handgun level in the NIJ scale and covers the .44 Magnum test round. The briefcase is not rated against rifle threats, so the threat assessment should treat it as a complement to other protective measures. For a case carried all day, weight and grip matter as much as protection. Regular training is recommended so that unfolding it becomes a reflex.
